Prince Harry and Meghan ITV doc sends viewers into frenzy

Speculation surrounding a royal engagement between Prince Harry and girlfriend Meghan Markle has been mounting in recent weeks.

And a new ITV documentary about the couple has only stoked the flames, prompting dozens of excited supporters to question whether Harry could pop the question at any moment.

Prince Harry and Meghan: Truly, Madly, Deeply, which aired on Monday night, followed the relationship from their first meeting at London’s exclusive Soho House to Meghan’s reported meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace last month.

It also speculated what their wedding might look like, with renowned constitutional historian David Starkey admitting the couple’s different backgrounds would mean it would be a ‘one-off’ and quite unlike any other.

Discussion around a possibly ‘imminent’ engagement – and subsequent star-studded wedding – sent fans of the couple into a frenzy, with dozens taking to Twitter to share their excitement.

One tweeted: ‘Can Harry and Meghan announce they’re getting married now please? #trulymadlydeeply’. Another shared: ‘I literally can’t wait for Harry and Meghan to get engaged.’

A third speculated that producers must have had insider knowledge, writing: ‘Starting a sweepstake on time until a engagement announcement. ITV wouldn’t put out that kind of doc without an inside hint.’

However others said the programme was ‘presumptive’ and gave viewers the impression there has been an engagement announcement even though there hasn’t.

The documentary, which featured contributions from Meghan’s family, friends, and former members of the royal household described how the couple shared similar formative moments, including being children of divorce, despite their vastly different upbringings.

It also pointed out that Harry was seen to be breaking royal convention in his choice of partner, choosing actress Miss Markle, 36, over a young society beauty or foreign princess.

Speaking on the programme, Mr Starkey explained that their unusual pairing would also mean a royal wedding that would be vastly different from previous ceremonies.

He said: ‘It will be very interesting to see what Meghan and Prince Harry choose to do. They’re a different kind of couple. She’s international in a way no other bride has been…

‘Heaven knows even what kind of guests will assemble. In that way it will be a one-off.’

Despite their differences, he added: ‘They seem to me to be a rather evidently good match.’

Meanwhile Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle admitted she would ‘love’ to go to the wedding should there be an engagement.

She said: ‘I can’t imagine how anyone would anticipate any traditional royal wedding… It’s just so silly, we’re so normal…. If there was a wedding I would love to go but we have no idea what is going to happen.’
