Prince Philip, 97, takes the reins of a horse and carriage just weeks after surgery

While his sons are taking luxury flights, Prince Philip took to a horse and carriage for a ride around Windsor Castle yesterday.

The 97-year-old steered the two-horse carriage through sun-soaked Home Park in the castle’s grounds.

The Duke of Edinburgh retired from public life last year, and underwent hip-replacement surgery two months ago, but his enthusiasm for carriage-driving is undimmed.

Whip in hand, the Prince was joined by two grooms on the back seat who appeared to be chatting with him.

Carriage-driving has been a favourite hobby of the Duke since he gave up playing polo in the 1970s.

He raced carriages near Norfolk before going on to represent Britain at several world and European championships.

Last month he revealed that one of his carriages, dubbed the Balmoral dog cart, ‘had to be rebuilt every year because it got smashed up regularly’.

The Prince has passed on his passion to granddaughter Lady Louise Windsor, the 14-year-old daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
