Prince William and Kate Middleton share their no-fuss authentic Christmas card

While some royal families like to go all out with festive photoshoots involving reindeer, festive trees and snow, the Prince and Princess of Wales have released a sunshine-filled Christmas card for 2022.

It features a beautiful family photograph which was snapped earlier this year on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, and shows Prince William and Kate Middleton, both 40, walking hand-in-hand with their children, all decked out in summer clothes.

In the years following their 2011 wedding, the couple has always preferred to share pictures taken earlier in the year, often during the summer or autumn, rather than using staged festive snaps.

Branding expert Nick Ede told FEMAIL that keeping the festive cards simple guarantees they look ‘authentic’ and ‘natural,’ as opposed to formal shots, which can look ‘contrived.’

the Prince and Princess of Wales have released a sunshine-filled Christmas card for 2022, which was taken during warmer times earlier this year on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk

Brand and Culture Expert Nick explained: ‘The casual image that the Prince and Princess have used for their family Christmas card isn’t particularly festive in style, but it is in keeping with their new aesthetic of showing candid family moments rather than posed festive photoshoots.

‘It’s a lovely card full of smiles and joy and and sun, which we are all needing at this time. I think it’s the perfect way to show off the family, casually dressed and having a candid moment, and sharing it with the world.’

He added that this kind of shoot is cost effective, as it doesn’t rely on stylists or contrived Kardashian-style set pieces or dressing, and keeps it looking ‘authentic and natural’, requiring just a ‘brilliant photographer and some fabulous smiles’.

For this year’s snap, nine-year-old George donned a smart £55 Ralph Lauren polo shirt. His little sister Princess Charlotte, eight, wore an adorable blue denim playsuit embroidered with strawberries and red pom-poms, believed to have cost £17 from Spanish brand Sfera.

Speaking to FEMAIL at the time, body language expert Judi James suggested the family’s picture, which was addressed to the NHS, showed the family’s great sense of unity.

She said Kate Middleton’s arm around daughter Charlotte’s waist showed a gesture of inclusion and protection, while Prince George’s smile showed his ‘shyness’ and ‘special bond with his father’.

A royal fan shared a picture of the family, believed to be taken at their Amner Hall residence in Norfolk, online, with a sweet message addressed to the NHS inside.

The card was addressed ‘To all the amazing NHS staff,’ with the message: ‘Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year’.

Inside, there is a handwritten note from William, Hello wrote at the time.

He writes: ‘We can never thank you again for all the dedication and sacrifice you have had to make this year. We will be forever grateful.’

The year before, Prince Louis stole the show in the family’s 2019 family snap, which also depicted a summery scene.

In the adorable snap, posted by Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty CBE RAFR on Twitter, Kate Middleton, then 37, could be seen holding onto the handlebars of a vintage khaki-coloured motorbike, while husband Prince William, also 37 then, sat on the seat with a bemused Prince Louis, one, on his lap.

Meanwhile, big sister Princess Charlotte, then four, was photographed standing in the sidecar next to them, while Prince George, then six, clad in a pair of red and blue checked shorts, appeared to be rubbing his ear at the back of the shot.

The social media post also showed the message inside the card, which reads: ‘Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year’ – and was signed in black pen by ‘Catherine’.

The inclusion of the vintage motorcycle – which appears to be a Rickman Metisse – may well have been Prince William’s idea, as the duke is a huge motorbike fan.

The 2017 family was slightly more formal and was one of the family’s rare snaps taken in a studio.

It showed William and Kate standing side-by-side, her in a pastel blue outfit, and him in a navy blue suit.

Prince George looked very dapper in a pair of navy shorts and checked blue shirt, which matched his sister’s blue checked dress.

The fact the family coordinated their outfits for the shoot was a subtle show of unity and harmony.

The previous year, William and Kate opted to share a snap taken on their tour of Canada, and showed them carrying one of their children each during an engagement.

Princess Charlotte, then a toddler, stood out in a lovely blue dress and a mop of blonde curls, with a dog made of balloons her mother was holding for her.

Prince George, who was wearing a blue sweater and red shorts, looked attentively at what was happening around him.

In 2015, which marked the arrival of Princess Charlotte in the family, she took centre stage in a sweet snap taken in the family’s garden.

Baby Charlotte was beaming, tightly nestled in Kate’s arm while her big brother gave the camera a big grin.

And in 2013, Prince George, than an only child, took centre stage in a sweet snap that showed him taking a close took at a butterfly resting on Prince William’s hand.

In comparison, the first pictures William and Kate shared as newlyweds and parents were much less personal.

In 2011, the year they married, they issued a snap which showed the both of them celebrating Canada Day in Ottawa.

The summer snap showed Kate donning a white dress with a red flower pinned to her chest with a fresh-faced Prince William sitting by her side.

In 2012, as younfg parents, they share an official snap of Prince George’s christening, which had taken place a few months earlier in October.
