Prince William steps out in shoes at Top Gun film premiere

The Duke of Cambridge gave a subtle nod to the iconic Captain Maverick as he hit the red carpet at the UK premiere of the Top Gun sequel this evening.

Prince William, 39, who is a trained RAF helicopter pilot, looked sharp in a classic tuxedo teamed with a pair of black loafers decorated with a small plane, reminiscent of the fighter aircraft used in the original 1986 action movie.

The stylish slippers are a departure for William, who typically plays it safe when it comes to his fashion choices.

But tonight he looked every inch the Hollywood star in his midnight blue velvet evening jacket, tuxedo trousers and statement shoes.

Meanwhile wife Kate looked resplendent in a Roland Mouret column dress, which she paired with black heels and a simple black clutch.

The couple joined leading man Tom Cruise and his co-stars Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller as A-listers and British TV royalty descended on London’s Leicester Square for the glitzy gala showing of Top Gun: Maverick.

The premiere is hosted by Paramount and The Film and TV Charity, of which Her Majesty The Queen is Patron and  has hosted special screenings attended by the Royal Family since 1946.

This isn’t first time Cruise has met the royal couple, with the Hollywood A-lister reportedly hosting a private screening for them at Kensington Palace earlier this year after learning William was a huge fan of the franchise.

Ahead of the premiere, Cruise, 59, said he and the Duke of Cambridge ‘have a lot in common’ as he spoke of his admiration for the royal.

‘We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying,’ he said.

The actor also expressed his joy to be back on the red carpet, saying: ‘I love what I do, I’ve always enjoyed it and I’m enjoying it even more now. ‘Particularly after the last couple of years, just to have an event like this is extraordinary.’

Cruise is no stranger to the Royal Family, previously revealing that he bonded with the late Duke of Edinburgh over their love of helicopters at a charity dinner at Buckingham Palace to mark the 75th anniversary of the Outward Bound Trust in 2017.

The film, which has so far received rave reviews from critics, sees Cruise reprise his role as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in a sequel to Tony Scott’s classic 1986 blockbuster Top Gun.

Earlier this month, Hollywood legend Cruise made an appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in honour of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

The actor was at the event in Windsor to introduce what he said was ‘one of the most enthralling, thrilling, heart-in-mouth displays’ as he announced a performance by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

Other stars at this evening’s premiere include Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell. It was originally due for release in July 2019 but was repeatedly pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this month, Cruise made a dramatic entrance at the US premiere of the film, landing a helicopter on an aircraft carrier in San Diego, California.
