All Melbourne-bound lanes of the Princes Freeway have been closed after a truck rolled over causing a massive diesel spill.

Daily Mail Australia understands the truck hit a metal expansion plate that came loose during overnight roadworks, damaging at least seven vehicles and causing the truck to roll over.

Drivers making their way from Geelong to Melbourne have been warned to expect 2.5-hour commutes, as police diverted traffic off the freeway through Werribee and the Point Cook area.

Live footage shows a long line of cars completely gridlocked on the road while emergency services work to clear the crash site.
