Property developer cuts down Sydney homeowner’s prized hedge

Furious moment resident comes home to find ruthless property developers with chainsaws CUTTING DOWN his prized hedge while working on a house next door – before an argument erupts

  • James Nova had returned to his home one day to find his prized hedge slashed
  • Caught a group of men with chainsaws who said they were following instruction
  • Nova blames neighbour property developer and wants $30,000 compensation
  • Neighbour said it isn’t his fault and crew accidentally cut down the wrong hedge

A homeowner was shocked to come home to his prized garden and find his hedge had been cut down by the property developer next door.

James Nova treasured his six-metre high bush that blocked the view of the new two-storey duplex next door but now just has row of leafless stumps.

He pulled into his driveway in Sydney’s North Ryde to see workers in high-vis wielding chainsaws finishing the job.

‘I said, “What the hell?” and they said, “Our boss told us we had to chop it down completely to the level of the fence,”‘ Mr Nova told A Current Affair.

However, the neighbouring property developer Harry Han insists the mistake is not his, but the ‘hedge henchmen’.

He said the chainsaw crew cut the wrong hedge by mistake and he should not be held to blame.

‘I’m the victim here,’ Mr Han insisted.

Mr Nova said the trim was an attack on his privacy that made him feel ‘devastated and violated’ and wanted police to prosecute for trespassing and malicious damage.

Mr Nova demanded $30,000 compensation for his hedge which will take five or six years to regrow.

‘The only thing developers worry about is money so I want money, simple as that,’ he said.

Mr Nova and Mr Han have since settled the dispute for an unknown sum.
