Proposed adults-only luxury hotel divides opinion among locals over its NO KIDS policy

  • A proposed hotel at Surfers Paradise has caused division over it’s ‘no kids’ policy
  • The hotel, named Seren, will be the first adults-only hotel on the Gold Coast
  • There has been pushback against the development as children are not allowed

A prestigious hotel development has caused division amongst residents and tourists due to its policy banning children from the venue.

The beachfront high rise named Seren at Surfers Paradise will be the first ever hotel on Queensland’s Gold Coast to be exclusively an adults only establishment.

A development application was lodged to the local council on Monday by developer KTQ Group.

Seren has been pitched as a ‘six star’ adults-only hotel that will attract a more up-market crowd wanting to holiday in Surfers.

But the luxury development has seen some pushback, particularly from parents, due to its policy banning kids.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate told 7News that he disagreed with the development, saying the hotel ‘doesn’t float my boat’.

‘I love families. I’ve got four kids, that’s what life is all about,’ he said.

One woman commented: ‘I like to stay at places that accept children, that’s our lifestyle. I think we should have access to those places as well.’

Opinion about the development was more divided on social media, with some arguing the venue would be a welcome relief for adults trying to unwind on their holiday.

‘Absolutely. It would be heavenly to not hear other people’s noisy kids,’ wrote one.

‘Oh hell yes!!!! No one wants to go on holidays and hear someone else’s kid screaming or throwing a tantrum,’ said another.

A third argued: ‘Take kids to the millions of family friendly hotels. I don’t want screaming, whinging kids on my holiday.’

Many parents also agreed that an adults-only hotel would be ideal for singles and parentless couples after acknowledging their own frustrations with their kids.

‘I’ve got 3 kids, would I stay at a kid free resort – hell yes,’ one woman wrote.

Another said: ‘Great idea, there are lots of family friendly hotels. I have kids and I know how annoying they can be to others.’

The proposed adults-only high-rise is 42 storeys tall and will feature a concierge, in-room dining and housekeeping, an infinity pool, garden rooms, a ‘wellness floor’ and other recreational facilities.

Seren will have the adults-only hotel on the lower level with 60 rooms and 60 residential apartments on the upper level.

It will be on located on Garfield Terrace in Surfers Paradise, close to the beach in an area highly desired by property developers.

KTQ Group told 7News that the adults-only policy was a ‘lightbulb’ moment to build on a market for grown-ups.

There are currently several adults-only hotels and resorts across Australia, but the market is tiny compared to the number of family friendly venues.
