Protestors clash with police at pro-Palestinian events marking one year since on October 7: Air raid sirens sounding in Tel Aviv as families break down at vigils remembering those killed by Hamas

Protestors have clashed with police at pro-Palestinian events across the world as thousands took to the streets to mark one year since October 7.

Images show Palestinian supporters and police clashing in New York, Montreal and Berlin.

In London the Metropolitan Police made sixteen arrests as thousands of protesters descended on central London.

The protests come one year since Hamas militants’ surprise cross-border attack killed about 1,200 people and took another 250 hostage.

Israel responded by waging a war against the Hamas militants in Gaza, where the fighting has killed over 41,000 people and displaced around 1.9 million.

The clashes come as air raid sirens rang out in Tel Aviv on Monday evening as Israel came under another missile attack while families were attending vigils for the dead.

The vicious attack sparked a war that has devastated the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip, fueled bloodshed across the Middle East and ignited protests all over the world.

The attack, on a major Jewish holiday, shattered Israelis’ sense of security and left the world facing the prospect of a major conflict in the Middle East.

The conflict has spread in the region, where Israel now also is fighting Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, facing escalating threats from Yemen’s Houthi rebels and contending with a mounting conflict with Iran, which backs Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.

New York

Anti-Israel protesters clashed with police on Moday as the crowd stopped outside the New York Public Library on their march uptown.

At least six people have been arrested in protests throughout the city, according to the New York Post.

It comes as thousands mobbed the streets of Manhattan on the first anniversary of the October 7 terror attack on the Jewish State.

Police were pictured detaining members of the public during the protest which had attracted thousands of people.

There were also reports of Todd Richman, co-founder Democratic Majority of Israel, facing a mob of keffiyeh-draped protesters who mocked and accosted him.

Berlin

In Berlin, a protest drew about 1,000 demonstrators with Palestinian flags, who chanted: ‘One Year of Genocide.’

The war in Gaza has led to genocide allegations against Israel at the World Court, which Israel denies.

German demonstrators also criticised what they called police violence against pro-Palestinian protesters.

Israel supporters in Berlin protested against rising antisemitism. Scuffles broke out between police and pro-Palestinian protesters.

Over the past year, the scale of the killing and destruction in Gaza has drawn some of the biggest global demonstrations in years, including in the U.S., which saw weeks of pro-Palestinian college campus encampments.

Advocates have raised concerns over antisemitic and Islamophobic rhetoric in some protests and counter-protests related to the conflict. Rights advocates have warned about rising threats against Muslims and Jews around the world.

Montreal

At around noon on Monday, a large crowd gathered at a vigil in front of McGill University’s Roddick Gates in Montreal, Canada.

There was a heavy police presence also in attendance as the crowd gathered to honour those who were killed and taken hostage by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

However the supporters of Israel, many of them waving Israeli flags, were confronted by a few pro-Palestinian counter-protesters.

Police intervened and kept the two opposing sides apart in what appeared to be peaceful scenes.

London

The Metropolitan Police made sixteen arrests as thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters descended on central London on Monday, with one banner poking fun at ‘silly sausage’ Sir Keir Starmer.

The police force said a ‘significant’ operation was in place across the capital – with multiple arrests happening just minutes after the march officially set off.

The protest, which was organised by the Palestinian Solidarity Group and others to mark the year anniversary of the 7th October terrorist attack on Israel, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Israel’s attacks on Lebanon.

Activists convened in Bedford Square on Monday morning for the planned march from Russell Square to Whitehall ahead of events marking a year since Hamas gunmen went across the Israeli border and killed 1,200 people – among the victims were children, the elderly as well as 364 attendees at Nova music festival.

The droves of protesters waved their flags and banners, with one marcher taking a swipe at the Prime Minister with a sign that read: ‘Starmer is a silly sausage’ – referencing an awkward mishap during his speech about Gaza hostages.
