PSG ‘plan huge transformation of the Parc des Princes’ after taking inspiration from Real Madrid – but ‘must agree stadium purchase deal’ before completing renovation project

Paris Saint-Germain are planning to be the next European giant to push through a state-of-the-art stadium renovation after drawing up plans to modernise the Parc des Princes, according to reports.

The Ligue 1 team are wanting to follow Real Madrid and Barcelona whom have both invested in massive stadium redesigns and pledged hundreds of millions to overhaul their facilities.

Madrid transformed the Santiago Bernabeu during a two-year renovation project and PSG have hired architects to draw up similar plans, despite the club still not owning the Parc des Princes, as reported by L’Equipe. 

The Qatari-backed club have until January 3, 2024 to submit their bid to purchase the ground to the local Parisian government, but have so far faced resistance.

A deal with the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo must be approved to obtain the ownership rights to the ground before the planned work can be carried out.

The Ligue 1 side want to also agree a deal to purchase the Parc des Princes that they currently lease

However, PSG have already opened discussions with architectural firms Pierre Ferret and Populous over new designs that will boost the capacity of the Parc des Princes.

The stadium currently seats 47,929 spectators, but new plans will extend the capacity to 60,000 along with featuring a retractable roof inspired by Madrid’s Bernabeu project.

Difficulties in obtaining land for a new stadium in Paris has forced the club into pursuing a ground purchase of their existing base.

In 2013, the club agreed a huge new lease with the Paris City Council until 2023, but now want to find a deal to own the ground.

PSG have previously refused to invest further funds in the central city stadium amid rising tensions with Mayor Hidalgo who claimed at the start of the year that the ground is ‘not for sale’.

Should a deal not be struck then PSG may look at pursuing options to obtain playing rights at another stadium elsewhere or revisit plans to build their own ground.
