Pub fight in Creswick ends with manslaughter charge

Man is charged with killing a ‘gentle giant’ tradie, 39, in a pub fight – as victim’s heartbroken godmother says ‘the town will be shattered’

A man has been charged with manslaughter following a brawl in a pub that resulted in the death of a 39-year-old tradesman.  

Police allege an altercation broke out between the two men at the Farmers Arms Hotel in Creswick, west-central Victoria at 2am on Sunday. 

A family friend, who claimed to have known the dead man for 30 years, described him as a ‘big gentle giant.’

The accused man, 41, handed himself in to a local police station at 6.30am and was charged with manslaughter. 

The man’s body was removed from out the front of the pub at about 9.30am. 

His godmother, Leanne, who did not want her last name printed, said residents left flowers outside the site of his death, she told The Courier Mail.

‘He was a loveable lad. He didn’t deserve this,’ Leanne said. 

‘The whole town will be shattered.’

Another family friend, who did not want to be named, said the deceased had two sisters and three brothers.  

They said his family was well-known in the Creswick community. 

The accused is due to face the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Monday.
