With pumpkin spice season converging with flu season, it was really only a matter of time before someone thought it would be a good idea to market to both needs in one product.
This week, customers discovered that CVS stores have begun selling Pumpkin Spice-flavored cough drops in bright orange packaging.
But while pumpkin spice lattes, cookies, cereal, and cake are all quite appetizing to pumpkin lovers, many people seem to have doubts about this particular flavor combination.
Too far? CVS is now selling limited-edition cough drops in pumpkin spice flavor
Minty: The cough drops are made with menthol, which means they taste like mint and pumpkin spice
Split opinion: Reactions to the new product have been mixed
No way: Plenty of social media users think the product crosses a line
Like most cough drops, these are made with menthol, a cough suppressant that can ease a sore throat — and tastes like cool mint.
Unsurprisingly, many social media users are turned off by the idea of sucking on something that tastes like mint mixed with pumpkin, noting that the two flavors are not often paired.
‘Menthol and pumpkin sound horrible together,’ wrote one Instagram user who shared a now widely-seen image of the drops.
‘I draw the line at Pumpkin Spice cough drops. No thanks,’ wrote another, while a third added: ‘They’ve gone too damn far now.’
One more said: ‘I generally love pumpkin EVERYTHING, but this sounds TERRRRRIBLE!!!’
Not for this guy: Most commenters seem quite put off by the unexpected combination
There is a market! However, some people know of customers who’ve already bought them
A fan! A few who have tasted them have said they’re surprisingly good
Now THAT’S odd: This year, Japan began selling limited-edition white chocolate Kit Kats in a cough drop flavor
However, not everyone is utterly repulsed by the offering, and a few people have already reported buying them.
Some have even shown excitement over the offering and have joked that they can’t wait to get sick.
Oddly enough, this isn’t the first unexpected cough drop flavor combination to make headlines this year. In August, the internet got wind of cough drop-flavored Kit Kats available in Japan.
The candy is actually made up of 2.1 per cent throat lozenge powder, which is kneaded into the white chocolate layers.
