Punter beats 12000 other entries to win Newcastle pub

A lucky punter who entered a raffle for $25 just hours before entries closed has won himself an entire Newcastle pub in a prize package worth $195,000.

Guy Ashford, a married father-of-two, didn’t think in his wildest dreams he would take away the prize and says the win is still a bit surreal.

‘I’m very happy, I think anybody who just won $30,000 cash and a bar in the restaurant strip of Newcastle would be,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Ashford is still deciding whether he will take over the running of the premises or sell it on but says the $30,000 cash component of the draw will give him a chance to accomplish some dreams.

‘I want to take the family to Disneyland.  We’ve been checking flights already,’ he said.

‘This is absolutely the best $25 I’ve ever spent.”

Das Hund Haus founder James Sneddon said he was passing on the torch to his beloved bar to give someone to live the dream as he had.

‘Pouring beers, bad conversation, sharing in the celebrations of life. Being a bar owner and working for yourself is everything it is cracked up to be,’ he said on the competition page.

‘With my partner and I having another business each, our gorgeous daughter Charlotte and soon to be 2 under 2 with a second bundle of joy on the way it is time to exit the restaurant business… for now.’

He said the odds had been great to win the prize which carries a value of $195,000 including $30,000 cash and$20,000 bond plus fixtures and fittings, stock and good will.

Mr Sneddon had uploaded the 12,621 entry names to a website random.org to select Mr Ashford as the winner, the Newcastle Herald reported.
