Punter wins nearly £6,000 thanks to Group C’s anticlimatic ending at Euro 2024… with ambitious bet coming in following England’s drab draw with Slovenia

  • Both games ended 0-0 in Group C on its final match day of the group stage
  • England were booed off the pitch by their fans following their draw with Slovenia

A lucky punter pocketed nearly £6,000 thanks to Group C’s drab ending on Tuesday evening.

The group was in the balance going into the final match day, with England guaranteed qualification but Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark all looking to book their own places in the last 16.

The latter two sides did so, with both matches on the night finishing 0-0 as the Three Lions were booed out of Cologne by their fans at the game.

They did, however, win their group, and will play their last 16 game on Sunday afternoon as they look to improve on their early-tournament performances.

It wasn’t all a downer for one fan, however, who put £50 on the results that ended up happening on the night. At odds of 117/1 with Betfair, the gamble returned £5,850 for a nice reward.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: ‘It’s been tough watching England during Euro 2024 so far, but they played a big part in a punter’s huge win on Tuesday night.

‘A bold punter put £50 on both England vs Slovenia and Denmark vs Serbia games to finish goalless, which offered odds of 117/1.

‘Despite England’s slow start to the tournament, Gareth Southgate’s side are the 10/3 favourites to win Euro 2024, with Spain following closely behind at 4/1. Germany are 11/2 to win it on home soil, while Portugal are 6/1 contenders to go all the way.’

England find themselves on a favourable side of the draw, avoiding the likes of Spain, Germany, France and Portugal until the final.

They hardly looked like breaking the deadlock, managing just four shots on target in the game, with Cole Palmer coming closest after coming off the bench late on.

Jordan Pickford was comfortable at the other end, meanwhile, as he kept his second clean sheet of the tournament.

In the other game, Denmark finished second by virtue of disciplinary record, having underperformed in their tie against the Serbs.

The two sides managed just four shots on target between them, with Jonas Wind having a goal disallowed in the first half.
