Pushchair destroyed by freight train at Nuneaton station

  • Distracted mother holding her baby takes her attention away from the pram
  • The buggy then rolls down towards the tracks as a freight train whizzes past
  • Pram is left in a mangled heap and is thrown along the platform
  • Luckily there was no child in the pram at the time of the incident

This is the shocking moment a distracted mother’s pushchair was completely destroyed by a speeding freight train.

Footage of the runaway pram at Nuneaton station shows the mother take her attention away from the buggy for a split second – as it then rolls into the path of the train, is flung across the platform and is pulled down down into the tracks.

Mothers and fathers are being warned to take more care following the release of the footage.

The CCTV footage shows the mother clutching her baby under her right arm and appearing to try to comfort it.

But as her focus is completely on her baby, the stroller which had shopping bags attached to it, rolls down the platform and smashes into train.

There was no baby in the buggy at the time of the incident.

The Rail Safety and Standards Board has published the footage to alert parents to the dangers faced at stations.

A spokesman for the RSSB said: ‘The best way of keeping you, your children and your belongings safe is to keep hold of your pram, fully applying the brake where possible.

‘We know that anyone looking after children will have their hands full and may feel they can’t keep an eye on everything and everyone at once.

‘But the CCTV at Nuneaton shows just how important it is to keep control of a pushchair.

‘For its part, the rail industry will always want to work to make things safer for passengers.’
