A python has been caught attacking a running shoe in a suburban Cairns back garden.

Caravonica resident Sipke Vink found the 2.5 metre long snake entangled around his shoes in his front yard on Tuesday, the Carins Post reported.

Initially, he thought the snake was trying to eat his sneakers but later questioned if the snake had another idea entirely.

A Cairns resident caught a 2.5 metre snake on camera curling itself around one of his running shoes on Tuesday

‘He was stuck in my shoe for about 50 minutes, and I tried to get him out, but he refused to let it go,’ Mr Vink said.

‘Maybe it had a good smell in it.’

David Walton from Cairns Snake Removals wondered if the scent on the shoe may have tricked the snake into mistaking it as something edible.

‘If you pick up a snake it will wrap around for whatever they can for security, otherwise thinks its going to fall,’ he said.

Over the years Mr Walton has seen snakes eat anything from teddy bears to dog’s toys.

The snake could have been tracking a scent he said, or investigating the shoe out of curiosity.

Gold Coast and Brisbane Snake Catcher Tony Harrison said something was luring the snake to the shoe.

‘It’s possible the pet cat or dog may have rubbed itself on the shoes and it smelt good to the snake.

‘Otherwise they might like fishing and fish smell on it.. or they have pet birds and walk through avairys often.’
