A Qantas baggage hander has been stood down after he was caught on video angrily throwing passengers’ luggage onto a trailer.

The worker was recorded on the runway hurling luggage at Karratha Airport, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, on Sunday, as passengers watched the disgraceful act from the airport lounge.

The handler can be seen picking up bags from a conveyor belt and aggressively throwing them onto a trailer, with some falling back onto the ground.

The video was uploaded to a Facebook page, where users slammed the airport worker.

‘He should be sacked, show this to the management,’ wrote one.

‘Wondered why my luggage comes out broken,’ said another.

A third commented: ‘I hope this was sent to city of Karratha and reported. Too bad if someone had something important in their bags and it got damaged.’

Other viewers were more sympathetic to the baggage handler, saying that he was clearly having a ‘bad day’.

‘Wow that’s crazy, he’s not having a good day, and I guess it’s going to get worse now,’ said one man.

A second user wrote: ‘Not a good day for that bloke… and everyone off that flight’

‘We all get frustrated at work sometimes! Why is he the only one loading the bags?’ added another.

The baggage handler has now been axed from his job.

It’s understood the man was contracted by Qantas, who are conducting an investigation into the worker’s conduct.

A spokesperson said: ‘We are disappointed with the behaviour in this video and we’ve raised it with our ground handling contractor for urgent action.’

It comes a week after Qantas received a ‘Shonky’ award from consumer watchdog Choice, which is given to the worst companies in Australia every year, and dubbed the ‘Spirit of Disappointment’.

The airline is also facing industrial action as disgruntled cabin crews plan to go on strike due to a plan by Qantas to extend work hours and reduce breaks.

The Flight Attendants Association of Australia claimed the staff filed applications in the Fair Work Commission to undertake work bans and strikes last month, with the earliest date for industrial action being November 18.

Qantas’ year has been marred by cancelled flights, poor customer service, lost luggage and frequent flight delays as the airline struggles to resume operations after the Covid travel bans.
