  • A racist poster telling backpackers they’re unwelcome has been found in Ary
  • The poster says that unless they’re from ‘northern Europe’ they’re unwelcome
  • It then lists an extra set of criteria such as speaking English and not being a ‘thot’
  • Many racists posters have been put up across the country anonymously recently

A poster has been put up in a Queensland town attacking backpackers of non-European decent.

The notice, which was found on the shop window of a store in the towns CBD reads: ‘Ayr is a backpacker free zone.

‘So unless you are of northern European decent, speak English and you are not a thot or a degenerate.

‘F**k off because you are not welcome here.’

The word ‘thot’ is misogynistic slang used to criticise promiscuous women.

The poster has been widely condemned by the community with Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin calling it ‘vile.’

‘We wholeheartedly welcome backpackers to our region, not only for the crucial work they do in our horticultural industries but for the cultural diversity they add to our community,’ Cr McLaughlin said in a statement.

‘I am appalled by the vile messaging in this poster. The person or persons responsible should hang their heads in shame.

‘The poster is certainly not in keeping with the friendly and welcoming nature of our community, which celebrates cultural diversity. Our cultural diversity makes the Burdekin a great place to live and enriches our way of life.’

It comes as the eastern seaboard has been littered with racist posters in the last few months.

In Sydney anti-Asian posters were found outside a busy shopping centre that called for an end to immigration amongst other things. It is unknown who put them up.

Anonymous neo-Nazi group Antipodean Resistance have also continued their campaigns by putting up stickers in Toowomba and Bathursts, in Victoria.

It is unclear if they were responsible for the anti-backpacker poster.

Police are investigating and would like anyone with information to contact them.
