A classic Australian beer brand is under pressure from a rival as a ‘war’ breaks out in Queensland.
Iconic brand XXXX has long been the most popular beer in Queensland, but it is now facing pressure from Great Northern.
Figures show one in every four beers consumed in Queensland is a XXXX or one of its related brands, the Courier Mail reported.

Great Northern experienced strong sales over the Christmas holidays.
Sales have shot up 56 per cent over that period, compared to those of XXXX which dropped 6 per cent.
‘It’s true, drinkers like to try new beers,’ XXXX sales director Patrick Donohue said.
‘For a very long time, XXXX was the only beer brand Queenslanders drank, and it is still No. 1,’ he said.
Great Northern spokesman Richard Oppy said the brand had a lot of momentum.

‘It’s performing exceptionally well and showing really strong growth year on year, we’re really pleased with the way it’s taken off. But we’re here to play the long game.’
XXXX Gold still has about twice the amount of Great Northern’s volume share, with 19.1 per cent compared to 10 per cent.
