Boy, 14, is fighting for life after being hit by a car while getting off his school bus – leaving driver who struck him ‘extremely distraught’

A school boy is fighting for his life after being hit by a Hyundai after hopping off a bus in a rural town. 

Levi Hanna, 14, got off the bus at Tin Can Bay Rd in Canina near Gympie in Queensland on Wednesday afternoon before he was struck crossing the road. 

The 27-year old female driver of the Hyundai i30 was reported to be ‘distraught’ after the horrific accident.

Levi’s step mum Petrina Hanna told the Courier Mail the teen’s 12-year-old sister Scarlett saw the horror incident unfold. 

‘She saw him go flying,’ Ms Hanna said. 

Ms Hanna said the girl dropped her bag and went straight to her brother to help him, stepping out onto the road to stop traffic. 

The boy suffered life-threatening head injuries and was flown to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane in a critical condition. 

Bystanders rushed to help the Year-9 Gympie High student before paramedics arrived.

His parents who live 100 metres away from where he was struck raced to the scene as he was being treated.

Sergeant Peter Bailey told 7News the motorist who hit him was not hurt in the incident.

‘She’s extremely distraught,’ he said. 

‘We’ve offered assistance to herself and anyone else who has been affected by this incident.’

Meanwhile, his stepmother started up a GoFundMe page to help with costs as his family from around Australia rally around him. 

Ms Hanna described him as a headstrong teen who loved fishing, footy, the beach and his puppy Rusty. 

She said Levi had not woken up by Thursday morning but the family have been playing his favourite YouTube fishing shows at his bedside in the hope of him waking up. 

‘He’s fighting hard,’ Ms Hanna said. 

‘We have hope. ‘We’re all hoping for the best.’
