Queensland cafe gives free coffee to rubbish collectors

Cafes along Australia’s east coast are offering free caffeine hit or a scoop of gelato to those who collect a bucket of rubbish off the beach.

Lure Living, a coffee shop in Yeppoon, in central Queensland started the eco-friendly initiative in 2017.

The initiative inspired The Blue Room and its sister shop Ocean Gelati and Coffee Bar in North Stradbroke Island off Queensland to get on board.

The main beach in North Stradford Island faces south-east and collects all the rubbish that travels from the south on an inshore north current Ms Truman told ABC.

‘We’ve had big swells and tide over the summer period, and there’s a ridiculous amount of rubbish down there,’ she said.

‘We got these big seas and swells, and there was so much there I thought ‘I can run this little campaign and see how we go.’

‘I think you’re responsible for the area you’re in. Be proud of your environment and proud to show it off and how we keep it, she said.

Ms Truman is offering the free rewards until the end of June.

The initiative was also taken on board by more than 15 cafes along the northern beaches in Sydney.
