A Sunshine Coast family were given a very Australian surprise on Christmas Day.

A resident in Caloundra was surely given a fright after she spotted a juvenile red-bellied black snake curled up on her thongs on Monday afternoon.

The small but deadly creature was nestled between the pair of black thongs, looped between the straps.

The black-coloured snake was hard to spot, blending in perfectly with the dark thongs.

The photo, posted to the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers page, left many users stunned at how well the snake matched its host.

‘Does it get any more Australian than that?’ the snake catchers captioned the photo.

‘That thing blends in real well!’ one person commented, noticing the pattern on the thongs perfectly matched the snake’s scales.

Red-bellied black snakes are common along the east coast of Australia and are venomous.
