A man was charged with bashing a dog to death with a sledgehammer in a bid to rescue his own dog.
Andrew Fischer, 38, allegedly killed Cheeky, a staffordshire bull terrier, after he found the dog with his silky terrier, Lily, in its mouth.
Brisbane Magistrate’s Court heard Fischer hit Cheeky on the head with a sledgehammer before he ‘flicked it out in the yard’ because he didn’t want the dog’s blood in his shed, The Courier Mail reported.

Neighbour Benjamin Schardt said he saw Fischer choking the dog until it was ‘motionless’, gripping Cheeky so tightly by the neck that the 38-year-old’s muscles bulged and veins popped from his neck.
Four-and-a-half year old Cheeky went missing from his Queensland home on July 19 last year where he was later thrown on Fischer’s front lawn.
Fischer told the court he and his wife took Lily and their other dog to the vet and when they returned, Cheeky had disappeared, the publication reported.
Fischer was charged with animal cruelty and wilfully and unlawfully killing the dog and the matter is expected to return to court.
