A man has been shot in the stomach after a police officer was stabbed in the chin with a knife.

Police arrived at a unit complex on River Terrace in the inner-city Brisbane suburb of Kangaroo Point around 11:30am on Wednesday to conduct a search warrant.

An altercation unfolded between police and a resident, 38, after which an officer was allegedly stabbed in the chin with a 20cm serrated knife.

The man has been transported to Princess Alexandria Hospital in a critical condition.

The male senior constable in his 40s was transported to Mater Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s understood a man from a different unit approached the officers from behind after they had entered a unit to serve the warrant.

Police tried to taser the man before he was shot in the abdomen by a junior female officer after he ignored directions to drop a weapon.

‘One shot was fired by a junior female uniform officer. The offender dropped to the ground and was disarmed immediately,’ Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said.

Seven officers were eventually involved in the incident after four uniformed officers were the first to arrive at the unit to serve a warrant.

A crime scene has been declared at the location and River Terrace is currently closed between Bell Street and Llewellyn Street, and is expected to remain closed for some time.
