An 18-month-old girl is fighting for life after her father accidentally reversed over her while she was in a driveway.

The incident unfolded outside a property in Roma, in Outback Queensland, on Sunday at about noon.

A police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the father heard his daughter’s cries for help after she was hit.

She suffered critical injuries to her upper body and was taken s to Roma Hospital before being airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said the girl is currently in a critical but stable condition. 

Roma Patrol Inspector Ray Vine told the Courier Mail the incident is being treated as a tragic accident.  

‘I’ve spoke briefly to the dad at the scene and it is a very tragic situation,’ Inspector Vine said.

‘There was another child in the car at the time and he had made numerous checks behind the vehicle.’

Inspector Vine said police are investigating how and why the child was in the driveway.  

‘There is nothing to suggest at this point in time there was any wrong-doing by any person; it’s just a tragic mistake,’ Inspector Vine said.

He urged people to be careful of children while driving.
