Derby Day at Flemington is known for its iconic black-and-white fashion theme.
And while some of the 100,000 attendees chose to stick to tradition many racegoers instead opted for colourful suits and even fancy costumes to celebrate the $1.5 million Victoria Derby.
Men wore everything from smart suits to superhero ensembles on what was expected to be the coldest Spring Carnival weather in decades, while the ladies chose geometric panels and shorter hemlines to signal the start of Melbourne Cup week.
On the track Ace High ($7) came from the midfield to win the major cash prize, with Sully ($7.50) and Astoria ($8) filling the minor placings.
The Bureau of Meteorology announced that Melbourne could experience its coldest first week of November in 50 years with the mercury struggling to get over 17 degrees over the next few days.
