Radio host Ali Clarke reveals the ‘toughest conversation’ she had to have with her young children following shock cancer diagnosis: ‘Devastating’

Radio star Ali Clarke had a ‘devastating’ conversation with her young children following her shock breast cancer diagnosis.

The Adelaide radio presenter, who co-hosts Max & Ali in the Morning with Max Burford, underwent a mastectomy in late July after her doctor found tumours.

And on Monday she penned a column for The Advertiser revealing the heartbreaking moment she had to tell her three children she was ill.

Ali shares Eloise, 13, Sam, 11, and Madelyn, eight, with her AFLW head coach husband Matthew Clarke.

She wrote: ‘Telling our three young children was single handedly one of the easiest, yet toughest conversations I will ever have in my life.’

‘Easy, because Matt and I decided straight away they needed to know and we needed to be completely honest with them because, if we broke their trust, they then wouldn’t believe us when we did tell them, that mummy was going to be ok.

‘Devastatingly hard, because whilst I had already cried over the possibility of missing them graduate, get married and grow old, I had to be cool, calm and collected so they hurt the least amount possible.’

Ali went on to say her children ‘cried’ when she told them and ‘asked questions that mainly related to them’.

However, all things ended well ‘with a day of us snuggling under the doona and watching movies of their choice’.

The radio host said her children hold her hand more often ‘and ask if I’m okay at unexpected times’ but have otherwise managed to cope with their mother’s cancer diagnosis.

It comes just a few weeks after Ali revealed she was returning to work less than one month after announcing a heartbreaking breast cancer diagnosis live on air.

During a show last month, Ali made a surprise return to discuss her recovery on air before revealing she would be back at work just a few days later.

‘Well what do you reckon now that you are starting to go stir crazy, are you feeling you want to come back to work?’ Max asked.

‘Tomorrow morning at 6am I will be back on the air,’ Ali revealed, much to the delight of Max and her fill-in Hayley Pearson.

Ali admitted that she was excited to return to work as she was running out of things to do in her downtime.
