An Oakland Raiders cornerback who prosecutors say beat and stomped on his sister’s boyfriend was charged on Thursday with assault and battery.

Sean Lee Smith, a 30-year-old NFL defensive player, faces three felony counts, including causing great bodily injury, in an alleged July 4 attack on his sister’s boyfriend in Pasadena, California.

Officials say Smith beat the man, Christopher Woods, and stomped on his head in the early morning hours, according to court documents.

The court documents do not say what prompted the alleged violence.

Smith could face up to seven years in prison if he is convicted on all three felony counts against him.

It was unclear on Thursday evening if Smith had retained an attorney.

‘We are looking into the matter to understand the facts,’ NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

Smith was drafted by the Miami Dolphins and played there and for the Kansas City Chiefs before signing a four-year, $40million contract with Oakland last year.

Last season he had 40 tackles, 11 pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Smith was expected to make an initial court appearance on September 29.
