Rangers poised to seal £4.5m move for striker Cyriel Dessers

Rangers are poised to make Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers their sixth signing of the summer… with Cremonese star undergoing Ibrox medical ahead of £4.5m move

Rangers are poised to confirm Cyriel Dessers as their sixth summer signing after the striker underwent a medical.

The Ibrox club have agreed a deal worth around £4.5million to land Dessers from Cremonese, with reports in his native Belgium suggesting the 28-year-old will sign a four-year contract.

Providing there are no issues with the medical or any unexpected late hitches, he’ll be announced as a Rangers player in the coming days.

In May, Mail Sport revealed that Dessers — who represents Nigeria at international level — and Sam Lammers were both being targeted by Michael Beale to help form a new-look attack.

Lammers finalised a £3.5m switch from Atalanta last month and Dessers is now set to follow as the Ibrox hierarchy continue to back Beale’s plans for the future.

Rangers had to show patience in negotiations after Cremonese, relegated from Serie A last season, initially placed a £7m price tag on the ex-Feyenoord forward.

However, a breakthrough in talks last week has cleared the way for Dessers to join fellow newcomers Lammers, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland and Abdallah Sima.

Beale is also thought to retain a longer-term interest in landing Brazilian forward Danilo after Feyenoord last week rejected an opening offer. The 24-year-old is believed to be keen on making the switch to Glasgow.

Nottingham Forest centre back Jonathan Panzo and Los Angeles FC midfielder Jose Cifuentes are two further options being pursued.

Rangers will also seek to trim the size of their squad, with Beale eager to run with a tighter group next term.

Glen Kamara, Ianis Hagi, Antonio Colak and Scott Wright are among those who could be allowed to leave this summer if suitable offers are received.

Rangers resumed pre-season preparations on Friday and will head to a training camp in Germany this week.

A friendly will then take place against Newcastle at Ibrox on July 18 as the countdown to the Premiership kick-off continues.

Meanwhile, former Rangers defender Calvin Bassey is a target for Brighton.

The Premier League club were interested last summer but didn’t match the £19m plus add-ons deal offered by Ajax. Rangers hold a sell-on clause as part of the club-record sale.

However, it’s thought it would only be activated if Ajax sold the player for a profit and that appears unlikely.
