Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer exits Game 3 of the World Series after only three innings with back tightness after entering outing against Diamondbacks with strained shoulder

Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer has exited Game 3 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of the fourth inning with back tightness.

Scherzer was warming up to start the inning before eventually walking off the mound with the trainer.

He had completed three innings of work and recorded one strikeout after throwing only 36 pitches.

In his previous two starts, Scherzer threw less than 65 pitches as he has still been recovering from a muscle strain in his shoulder.

Scherzer recently missed more than a month with a muscle strain before returning to start two games in the American League Champion Series against the Houston Astros.

In the first of those two starts which was Game 3 of the ALCS, Scherzer allowed four five runs in four innings and only threw 63 pitches.

During his next start in Game 7 Scherzer left the game after throwing only 44 pitches and giving up two runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Despite the short outings since the 39-year-old returned to the mound, manager Bruce Bochy previously said Scherzer was stretched out to give the Rangers what they need Monday night when the World Series switched locations to Arizona.

‘Yeah, I think so. He could give us length. I´ve talked to him about this,’ Bochy said before Game 2.

‘He´s comfortable pretty much throwing like he normally does. Maybe not quite as long as he´s been over 100 pitches, whatever, but pretty close.’

At the time of Scherzer’s departure the Rangers were leading 3-0 following a big third inning at the plate.
