Ranvir Singh, 46, admits she has struggled with ‘over-eating’ for 30 years and relies on food to help ‘control’ her emotions

She’s one of the most recognisable and outspoken faces on British television, who has been open about her past struggles with her fluctuating weight.

And now Ranvir Singh has told how she’s spent the last 30 years using food as an emotional crutch and a way to help control how she’s feeling.

The Good Morning Britain host, 46, said people are made to feel their over-eating is due to not being ‘clever enough’ or ‘less motivated’ than others, when it is more closely linked to emotional issues.

She said eating too much is ‘deeper’ than being ‘just about the food’ and that she finds it to be the ‘most easily available substance to rely on to stop me feeling discomfort.’

‘I may have fallen into the trap of making it look like all you need is ‘more knowledge’ and ‘more education’ to solve an eating habit,’ she said of her recent social media posts about nutrition and wellness.

‘But that’s not completely true. And thinking like that can make you feel completely stupid, like somehow you’re not clever enough to ‘be better’ or that you’re ‘less motivated’ than someone else.’

Writing on Instagram, she added: ‘The full truth is that I’ve found food to be the most easily available substance to rely on to stop me feeling discomfort – of any kind. Even the discomfort of being ‘happy’.

‘And this has been going on and off for over 30 years.’

Ms Singh said she had spent ‘a long time’ and ‘a lot of effort’ in trying to ‘learn how to handle my emotions and build trust in myself that I can get through anything without relying on food to help me.’

She said she is still ‘trying to learn this’ and is still ‘only at the beginning’ of her journey.

The broadcaster, who competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, announced she’d split from husband Ranjeet Singh Dehal the previous year.

She is now in a relationship with Louis Church, 28, a Strictly producer whom she met while appearing on the BBC dance contest.

Back in January she told how she’d put on a stone-and-a-half since Church had moved in with her as she was ‘constantly eating’ while tired.

‘I am a stone-and-a-half overweight – it’s my hangover from constantly eating when tired,’ she told the Telegraph.

‘It’s not just New Year when I decide to overhaul my diet and fitness regime – it’s every Sunday night.

‘I head to the local gym for an hour’s spin class. I wish I hadn’t given up dancing after Strictly, but it just didn’t fit my day-today.’
