Rare baby albino echidna spotted in Tasmania

An adorable video has emerged showing a rare albino baby echidna digging around in the wild in Tasmania.

The cute clip shows the baby echidna, called a puggle, sniffing around the forest floor with its snout.

The video, uploaded by photographer Rosalind Wharton, was taken in the Freyicet National Park in Coles Bay.

Ms Wharton captioned the adorable scene with the location, saying the area was ‘Home to Wineglass Bay, the Hazards Mountain Range.’

She continued: ‘And this completely off the charts adorable young albino echidna.’

The native animal is found all over the Australian mainland, with the Tasmanian variation usually coloured black.

Ms Wharton said, ‘just look at him!’, suggesting the cute monotreme was a male.

Albino animals like the the Tasmanian puggle do not produce melanin, which results in little or no color in the skin, hair and eyes. 

Echidna’s are covered in short spikes for protection and roll into a ball when they are threatened or scared.
