Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has called for ‘calm’ after being targeted by booing fans as Zinedine Zidane’s side endure uninspiring start to La Liga campaign.

The Wales international has found himself the prime target of jeers and terrace taunts following Madrid’s dip in form.

The 28-year-old impressed during their Champions League opener against APOEL in midweek, setting up Cristiano Ronaldo’s first in the 3-0 victory.

But its unlikely his performance will tame the fans – who are famously known to have an insatiable hunger for success – as their last two league results at the Bernabeu have shown. Slipping to two home draws is not acceptable.

Madrid had started the season with cause for optimism after strolling to the Spanish and European Super Cup, but after recent results, which have been heightened by their fierce rivals Barcelona – who look back to their best – Zidane is now battling somewhat of a mini crisis.

Bale has received the backing of Zidane and his team-mates during the testing run, though, and now the Madrid forward insists he’s confident they will turn things around if the supporters remain patient.

He said at an Adidas event in Madrid: ‘We need to be calm and take it game by game.

‘We had a great start with the two titles, but we want to keep winning. Our goal has not been achieved yet and we want to win everything.

‘We were the first team to win two Champions Leagues in a row and now there is the motivation to win a third.’

Despite some of the fans targeting Bale it seems it has not affected his relationship with some of the Madrid faithful.

He took to Instagram on Friday to post a picture of himself smiling with some fans and wrote: ‘Great to meet the fans today in Madrid!’

Zidane’s side are back in La Liga action on Sunday when they travel to Real Sociedad in what will be the final game of Ronaldo’s five-match domestic ban following the red card he got for pushing a referee last month.
