  • Real Madrid news: All the latest from the Bernabeu

Isco has called on Real Madrid fans to calm the hype that has built up around Marco Asensio and says putting ‘little birds’ in his head could stop him fulfilling his massive potential.

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most prodigious talents and is now a mainstay in Zinedine Zidane’s squad following his breakthrough last season.

Pundits have been quick to pick Asensio as a future Ballon d’Or winner but Isco revealed there has been no talk of reaching such heights at the training ground and says team-mates are actively trying to keep him focused on getting better.

‘He has great potential and a massive future in the game, he has a prodigious left foot, one which practically no other player has,’ he told Movistar+.

‘We just have to let him keep improving with calmness and not allow his head to be filled with little birds.

‘People are talking about how they think he is going to win the Ballon d’Or but we don’t talk about that and don’t think about winning that.

‘All that we can do is work hard and try to get better every day.’

Asensio has hit the ground running this season, scoring seven goals and providing two assists across all competitions for Real Madrid, but the team have been lacking in form and find themselves eight points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Isco, who himself has also be performing well with five goals and four assists, says the good form of individuals will mean little if they do not achieve their goals for the season.

He continued: ‘The beginning of the season hasn’t been one we expected. There have been many factors for this that aren’t normal at a club like Madrid.

‘There’s been a small dip and things have perhaps taken a toll on us. We are eight points behind Barcelona and that is a difficult gap but we have achieved much more difficult things in the past.’
