Rebecca Balding, actress best known for roles in Soap and Charmed, passes away at 73

The acting world is in mourning on Wednesday with the news of actress Rebecca Balding passing away at 73 years of age.

The actress, best known for for her roles in Soap and Charmed, passed away on Monday at her home in Park City, Utah, her husband James L. Conway confirmed to People on Wednesday.

Balding had been battling ovarian cancer for many years, with her husband Conway, a film director and actor, recalling how they met.

‘I was casting the film, The Boogens. Rebecca came in to audition. We chatted, she read and when she left, I turned to the associate producer and said, “I could marry that girl,”‘ Conway said. 

‘Somehow she got cast. The first week of shooting we went out. That Saturday night, she proposed. And four weeks later, while still shooting, we got married,’ Conway continued. 

‘Of course, no one thought it would last. That was 41 years ago,’ he added.

Balding was born in September 1948 in Little Rock, Arkansas and attended the University of Kansas before focusing on her acting career.

She started her career with guest-starring roles in TV shows such as The Bionic Woman, The Tony Randall Show, Barnaby Jones, The Rockford Files, Starsky & Hutch and Supertrain.

Her first major role was Carol David, the mother of Jodie Dallas’ child on Soap, appearing in 19 episodes between 1978 and 1980.

She continued to guest star in top shows like Cagney & Lacey, Family Ties, Trapper John M.D., The Fall Guy, McGyver and a recurring role in Paradise.

Balding also guest-starred on Designing Women, Home Improvement, 7th Heaven, Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210, ER and the movie Yesterday’s Dreams.

Her final role was as Elise Rothman, the boss of Alyssa Milano’s character on Charmed, which she played from the fourth season until its eighth and final season.

The actress is survived by her husband Conway, who she was married to for 41 years. 

She is also survived by her daughters, Sarah and Kathleen, and her grandchildren.
