Rebel Wilson’s $4.5million defamation payout has been slashed to just $600,000 on appeal.
Bauer Media appealed against a Supreme Court of Victoria order that Wilson be compensated $650,000 in general damages and $3,917,472 in special damages over a series of articles published in 2015 that painted her as a serial liar.
The Court of Appeal on Wednesday cut the general damages payout to $600,000 and set aside the special damages sum, finding it was wrongly awarded.

During a two-day appeal hearing in Melbourne in April, Bauer’s barrister Michael Wheelahan QC argued the level of damages was ‘manifestly excessive’.
The night before the decision, Wilson took to Twitter to reveal she wasn’t bothered by the appeal.
‘What happens tomorrow is to do with… Bauer Media quibbling about how much they now have to pay me,’ she wrote.
‘While this case was never about the money for me, I do hope to receive as much as possible to give away to charities and to support the Australian film industry.’
