Customer spots ‘outrageous’ detail in popular Tim Tam packaging – irritating thousands of fans
- Shopper notices difference between two Tim Tam packets
- The Deluxe Dark Choc Mint packet contained less biscuits than the Original
Two ordinary packets of Tim Tam biscuits have sparked outrage among hundreds of angry Australians.
A shopper noticed a subtle difference in the packaging of a couple of popular Tim Tam flavours – Original and Deluxe Dark Choc Mint.
After comparing the pair side by side, it was apparent that one contained less biscuits than the other and more plastic.
While both packets are the same length, the Original contains 11 biscuits and weighs 200g while the Choc Mint only comes with eight and weighs 175g.
‘Australia’s biggest scam unwrapped,’ the customer wrote on Reddit.

Rather than focusing on the number of biscuits in each packet, the shopper was more concerned about the amount of plastic used.
‘The photo shows the spacing of the deluxe which is wasteful and the packet sizes are the same length, which is deceiving,’ the customer wrote.
Others agreed with one person writing: ‘(It’s) still the same f***ing amount of plastic. That’s the outrage I think: polluting just for the sake of marketing, because they’re afraid a smaller package will sell less.’
Another added: ‘I was thinking the same thing, stupid amount of plastic for eight biscuits’.
The Reddit post was liked by more than 7800 people and hundreds left a comment to share their opinion.
Some guessed the difference in packaging has to do with ‘marketing’ while others thought it links to shipping.

‘It’s not just the smaller pack, it’s also that they want the same size packs in the same size boxes so they look better when stacked or on a shelf,’ one said.
‘It probably has less to do with marketing than it does with manufacturing and shipping,’ another said.
‘If everything is designed around a certain package size then it would be far less expensive to reuse that package.’
Others weren’t surprised in regards to the number of biscuits in each packet, with one writing: ‘It literally shows, right on the front, how many biscuits are in each packet.’
‘Special flavours have always had fewer bikkies. But who is going stop buying all the delicious flavours?’ a second added.
‘It tells you how many biscuits there are and also the net weight. Most definitely not a scam,’ a third wrote.
