Referee Stephanie Frappart had to be escorted off the pitch by police following the Greek Cup final between Panathinaikos and Aris.

Frappart issued three red cards during the game, sending off Giannis Kotsiras of Panathinaikos and Aris pair Jean Jules and Vladimir Darida.

Although there weren’t any fans in the stadium, Frappart was still confronted by Aris players and staff, as reported by Ouest-France.

Aris president Theodoros Karypidis was seen confronting Frappart after the game. 

Panathinaikos won the game 1-0, with Georgios Vagiannidis scoring in the seventh minute of stoppage time at the end of the second half.

Frappart became the female referee to officiate the Greek Cup final. There weren’t any spectators permitted due to problems with hooliganism in Greece. 

On December 1 2022, Frappart made history as she became the first woman to to referee a men’s World Cup match when she oversaw the game between Costa Rica and Germany in Qatar.

She was also the first female referee in Ligue 1 and was in charge for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup clash between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Frappart was also the first woman to referee a men’s Champions League match – the clash between Juventus and Dynamo Kiev in 2020.
