Reggie Chaney, college basketball star who helped lead Houston to the Final Four in 2021, dies at age 23 – just one week before he was set to begin his professional career in Greece

Former University of Houston basketball player Reggie Chaney has died at the age of 23. The former college hoops star passed away Monday night but a cause of death was not immediately known. He reportedly had been set to join the AE Psychiko, a professional basketball team in Greece, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Chaney had been a member of the Arkansas Razorbacks for two seasons before transferring to the University of Houston, where he played for three seasons. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native was named American Athletic Conference’s Sixth Man of the Year last season – his final one with the Cougars. He had also been a member of the University of Houston team that advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 2021. Despite battling a number of injuries, Chaney managed more than 100 games for the University of Houston.

Chaney averaged 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for Houston in his three seasons with the program before graduating in May with a degree in liberal studies. In a statement to WholeHogSports, Razorbacks head coach Eric Musselman said that the ‘men’s basketball family is devastated to hear of the loss of Reggie Chaney. He was a relentless worker and loved by his coaches and teammates. His family is in our thoughts and prayers,’ Musselman said.

‘Two words that describe Reggie, Always Dependable,’ former Houston teammate Justin Gorham wrote on Twitter. ‘No matter the situation yk Reg gonna give his 110%. Glad I got the chance to lace em up with him, without Reg we don’t accomplish half the things we did. Rest easy brother LOVE,’ Musselman continued.
