A registered sex offender has been arrested after he was allegedly caught having sex with a dog in New York.

Vincent Persico, 64, is accused of abusing the dog in the Long Island neighborhood of Melville on September 13.

Persico knew the owners of the dog he allegedly abused and that he had permission to be in their home at the time.

Suffolk SPCA Chief Wally Gross told DailyMail.com that the dog’s owners came home to find Persico engaged in the sex act.

Persico was not expecting the family to return home, Gross said.

The family reported the incident to police and investigators tracked Persico down at a home in nearby Copiague.

He was charged on Tuesday with one count of animal cruelty and one count of sexual misconduct with a dog.

Persico is listed on the state’s sex offender registry as a level two sex offender. He was convicted in 1998 of second degree sexual abuse.

Chief Gross described the dog incident as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘very disturbing’.

‘The dog owners, when they see something like this, it’s got to be a traumatic experience,’ Gross said.

‘There is a strong link between child abuse, domestic violence and animal cruelty… be vigilant.’

Persico was released on bail and is scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip on November 27.

He faces up to two years in prison if convicted of both charges.
