The decapitated body of an 81-year-old woman has been found in a Chicago home, police say.

Authorities indicated that the woman, whose identity has not been released, was ‘senselessly and viciously murdered’ in her home in the Rosemoor neighborhood of Chicago’s Far South Side.

Her remains were discovered in storage bins on Sunday at around noon after a real estate agent who had been trying to get in contact with her for several days smelled a foul odor and called police.

Police described the scene as ‘very clean’, and as of Monday afternoon no one has been taken into custody and no weapon has been recovered.

‘Whoever did this put a lot of effort and time into doing this horrific act,’ Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

‘Right now we are relying very heavily on physical evidence from the crime scene, assuming she was murdered in this home. We don’t know for sure.’

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the woman Monday, but has not yet ruled on the cause and manner of death, pending further investigation.

It is unclear when she was killed or whether there are any persons of interest at this time.

The woman’s neighbors told NBC5 that she had owned the house since the 70s but rented out the property.

She had reportedly moved back in the day before Memorial Day, about three weeks before she was found dead.
