Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings has been admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital for a bacterial infection in his knee.

His office said doctors drained the infection in a minor procedure Friday.

Cummings’ office says he is resting comfortably and expects a full recovery.

The 66-year-old leading Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee had a heart procedure last year.

He was hospitalized for a few days in May for a transarterial aortic valve replacement to treat aortic stenosis.

His office announced the latest medical procedure on the same day as his wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, announced she was suspending her campaign for Maryland governor.

‘Making a positive and direct contribution to the state of Maryland and to our nation was my greatest motivating factor for stepping into the public arena. Unfortunately, due to personal considerations, I am suspending my bid for governor of Maryland,’ Rockeymoore Cummings said in an email to supporters which was obtained by POLITICO.

Political sources told POLITICO that her decision was directly linked to her husband’s health issues.

Rockeymoore Cummings was one of nine Democrats who are vying for the nomination in a bid to unseat the Republican incumbent, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.

Aides who came into contact with Elijah Cummings just before  the Christmas break said that the congressman appeared to be moving slowly.

After he was hospitalized in May, he did not appear at the Capitol until September because of a post-operation infection that he contracted.

When he returned in September, staffers noticed that he looked much slimmer than before.

Cummings told aides he was ordered to keep to a stricter diet and to get more sleep.

First elected to the House in 1996, Cummings has represented his hometown of Baltimore.
