Residents of Holyhead street near school blockade the road

Residents of a street next to a primary school barricaded themselves in with wheelie bins to stop their street being taken over by cars during the school run.

Homeowners on Maes Cybi street in Holyhead, Anglesey, say they are fed up with parents using their road as a car park while they drop off and pick up their children from Ysgol (school) Cybi.

They used wheelie bins to block off the entrance to their road this week in a bid to stop the cars taking over.

Residents of a street in Wales blocked their road with bins to prevent school run parents leaving their cars there. They say they have been verbally abused when confronting parents

Locals insist there is a car park at the school but parents leave their vehicles on their street because they think it is more convenient.

Resident Gemma Whitaker said: ‘Since day one of the school opening, it has been absolute bedlam.

‘From 8.30am, you have them taking up the whole street. You ask them if they would mind moving so you can get out and you get abuse.

‘We will fight this in any way we can. We didn’t want it to come to this but we have to do something about it.’

Fellow resident Enfys Owen added: ‘Parents have a parking space at the gym in the back but it is always empty

and they all park down our street instead.

‘There are a lot of children walking down the street, cars don’t slow down and they park all over.

‘There are people parking against our gates so we can’t get out ourselves. It can’t go on. It just isn’t fair on anyone.’

In a message on Facebook, headteacher Tristan Roberts said: ‘As a school we have taken steps to encourage parents to use our designated car park, including taking children on safety walks and issuing newsletters to

parents.

‘We are happy to continue to promote this as a show of goodwill by adding the matter to our January newsletter.

‘However, it is the highways department that is responsible for tackling illegal parking and I would suggest you lobby them for assistance.’

A council spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of the concerns raised in respect of Maes Cybi and will be working with local partners to consult with residents on options to improve the situation.’
