Restaurant employee fired for identifying woman as n-word on receipt

An employee at a University of North Texas chicken joint was terminated after he identified a black woman with a racial slur rather than her name on a receipt.

The woman, Chelsea Shaw, shared a picture of her order receipt Tuesday at Krispy Krunchy Chicken at the university’s dining hall, which read ‘N—-R’ next to the ID and above her wing order.

Shaw posted the photo to Twitter with the word circled, below the caption, ‘I need answers…….’

The tweet attraction attention immediately – from the Executive Director of Retail Dining Services Bill McNeace as well as University President Neal Smatresk.

Smatresk took to Twitter to inform the public that action had been taken on the matter.

‘Our Mean Green family values respect and prides itself on inclusion. It is completely unacceptable and not who we are as a community,’ the president wrote.

‘We acted immediately to identify the person responsible and that person has been terminated.’

When the culprit was identified, McNeace said school officials found out the man was not only an employee, but a cook at Krispy Krunchy Chicken.

‘It appears that is would have been the cashier, but it was not the cashier. It was actually the cook who did it,’ McNeace told local journalist Jade Jackson.

University President Neal Smatresk said the employee has been fired. Smatresk is seen attending a basketball game between the UNLV Rebels and the Air Force Falcons at the Thomas & Mack Center February 15, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada

The cook reportedly apologized to the manager and sought the customer who he called the racial slur on the receipt to apologize.

In a press release, before Shaw realized action had been taken, she demanded the dining hall restaurant close completely.

Under the release title demanding the closure, the letter said in part: ‘For many African Americans in this country, there is a pervasive tension that is felt when patronizing public institutions of higher learning – and even restaurants – that aren’t historically dedicated to accepting us as students or customers.

‘In the racial climate that we live in today, an act such as using racial epithets such as ‘N—-r’ is widely known to be intolerable. The fact that minority students at our universities are not safe from experiencing this type of humiliation is troubling.

‘UNT has a job to do, and that is to make its campus accessible and safe for all students, regardless of color.’
