An astounding colorized image of Lee Harvey Oswald, the killer of former U.S. President John F Kennedy, has reemerged today, on the anniversary of his assassination.

Oswald, whose colorized picture features in author Michael D. Carroll’s new book ‘Retrographic: History in colour’ was later killed himself, shot by nightclub owner Jack Ruby while being escorted from jail on November 24.

Kennedy was killed before he even got to complete a single term in office, and Martin Luther King Jr, the famous Civil Rights protester, perhaps summed up the mood of the nation best in the aftermath of his death.

‘We were all involved in the death of John Kennedy. We tolerated hate; we tolerated the sick stimulation of violence in all walks of life; and we tolerated the differential application of law, which said that a man’s life was sacred only if we agreed with his views,’ he said.

‘This may explain the cascading grief that flooded the country in late November. We mourned a man who had become the pride of the nation, but we grieved as well for ourselves because we knew we were sick.’

Video shows the 43-year-old Kennedy, who beat Richard Nixon in the 1960 Presidential election to be named President, taking to the stage in front of thousands of people to give his inaugural speech as President.

The speech featured famous quotes such as ‘Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country,’ and ‘Let the word go forth, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans.’

During his short time in office, Kennedy dealt with several major incidents including the Cuban missile crisis, the Bay of Pigs invasion and the first large-scale Civil Rights march on Washington.
