Nintendo says the retro version of one of its iconic video game platforms is making a comeback in 2019.
The 8-bit NES Classic went on sale last year selling 1.5 million units, but the Japanese gaming firm shocked fans by mysteriously pulling the plug on production in April.
The company now says its NES Classic Edition will now return next summer due to popular demand.
Nintendo says the retro version of one of its iconic video game platforms will return to stores next year. The Japanese announced in April that it had ended production of the nostalgic NES classic, re-released in November 2016 and selling around 1.5 million units
The Kyoto-based company launched the system at the end of last year in time for the holidays, but demand for the nostalgic console was far more than retailers could supply.
It first went on sale on November 11 for $60 (£50), but following its release, many sellers on eBay saw bidding for the consoles go for far more.
Nintendo announced on Twitter that it was reversing its unpopular decision to end its production run.
It also confirmed plans to continue selling the SNES Mini, the second generation Nintendo console that was also re-released in the wake of the NES Classic’s popularity.
In a written statement, a company spokesman said: ‘Fans have shown their unbridled enthusiasm for these Classic Edition systems, so Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves.
‘Due to incredible demand for the upcoming Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo plans to ship the retro-inspired product into 2018.
‘Originally, shipments were announced to cease at the end of this calendar year.
The NES Classic Mini comes with 30 games pre-installed, including Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda
‘Next summer, Nintendo will also bring back the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system with new shipments.
‘More information about the timing of the return of NES Classic Edition will be announced in the future.’
The NES Classic system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and one controller, which is patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller.
The device looks almost exactly like the original NES, but smaller.
It can be hooked up directly to high-definition TVs.

The new Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is a mini console that mimics the design of the original system.
It’s said to be one of the ‘greatest video game systems ever made,’ and now, Nintendo has revealed it’s resurrecting the Super NES console that first launched back in 1991. But, the new system will be much smaller than you remember
It comes with two controllers, and plugs into any high-definition TV with an included HDMI cable.
Along with the familiar games included in the package, the Super NES mini console also comes with Star Fox 2 – an unreleased game that was supposed to launch in 1995.
In order to access this game, however, players will first have to beat the first level of the original Star Fox game.
‘While many people from around the world consider the Super NES to be one of the greatest video game systems ever made, many of our younger fans never had a chance to play it,’ said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the time of its announcement.
