Revealed: Gavin & Stacey cast are working on a behind-the-scenes documentary to mark final outing as beloved series returns to screens for Christmas special

When James Corden announced that he was making a Gavin & Stacey Christmas special, he insisted it would be the last fans would see of the show.

But here’s some tidy news – the cast are working on a behind-the-scenes programme to mark its final ever outing.

Corden and Ruth Jones have been recording it as they made the festive special in the Welsh seaside town of Barry Island last week.

Cameras followed them as they mixed with fans, posing for more than 100 selfies, capturing the interactions between the cast and their adoring public, who began arriving last Monday.

Joanna Page – the actress who plays Stacey Shipman – was also seen being trailed by a crew when she greeted fans. Sources on the set say that the footage is to be used to make a documentary about the much loved comedy series, which first launched on BBC Three in 2007.

One said: ‘When the cameras filming Gavin & Stacey stopped, other cameras went on to film the behind-the-scenes action. There was loads of lovely footage for the programme; it has been so special for its viewers. James is astute and realises that there is a wonderful story to be told about the making of it and what goes on behind the scenes.’

Barry Island was mobbed last week when the original cast returned to make the finale.

As well as Corden, Jones and Page, Mathew Horne, who plays Gavin Shipman, was also back on set despite allegedly falling out with Corden in the past. Rob Brydon, who portrays Stacey’s Uncle Bryn was also seen filming.

An emotional Corden told fans: ‘It’s all overwhelming, the fact that it’s the last time we’ll be here on the island. It’s wonderful. It’s the home of the show. It’s the centre of it really, and every bit of it you’re thinking: “God, I remember when we were here.” ‘

On the first day of filming the cast shared a picture of a clapperboard with the caption: ‘The final episode of Gavin & Stacey started filming today. Truth be told, we’re a little bit excited.’

It will be the first episode of the BBC sitcom since the last Christmas special in 2019. That episode, which was watched by 12 million viewers, ended on a cliffhanger with Nessa down on one knee as she proposed to Smithy.

The show centres around the ups and downs of Gavin and Stacey’s initially long-distance relationship, with him living with his parents in Billericay, Essex, and her in Barry Island. The pair eventually marry, while their respective best friends Smithy and Nessa have a son, Neil, who is now 15 and will also return for the final ever episode.

Neil is played by the same actor, Oscar Hartland, who portrayed him as a baby.
