  •  Australian netball team’s dance has gone viral
  •  Architect of routine says he was inspired by Deadpool
  •  Says he’d like to see dancing before more sports

The Aussie netballer behind the recent viral dance performance has revealed that the controversial routine was inspired by the latest Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

The Australian men’s netball team stunned viewers over the weekend with the side’s pre-tournament dance performance on the opening day of the Fast5 series in Christchurch.

The national team, known as the Kelpies, got the crowd on their feet before their first match with their dance routine to NSync’s Bye Bye Bye.

The controversial routine has since gone viral, notching up millions of views online with fans divided over if they like it or not.

The player who came up with the idea was goalshooter Dravyn Lee-Tauroa, and he says he was inspired by Deadpool.

‘That was on me. So, we started with the cha-cha slide and I didn’t want any part of that,’ Lee-Tauroa told Seven’s Sunrise.

‘I saw this dance come up on TikTok from the new Deadpool movie.

‘I was inspired by that and the boys got around it.

‘We always wanted to be in a boy band. Who hasn’t? And we got to perform.’

Aussie teammate Liam Forcadilla explained that the moves took a while to perfect.

‘Yeah, it was pretty hard to squeeze in learning the dance in between our training matches, but we kind of got there in the end,’ he said.

‘We loved it and the crowd loved it, too. It was so loud in there.’

Unlike usual netball, Fast5 has just five players on each team, six-minute quarters, and two and three-point shots.

Fast5 is a little like the Big Bash of netball, the tournament boasts pyrotechnics, bright uniforms, loud music and choreographed team dances.

Lee-Tauroa said he would like too see pre-match dance routines in more sports.

‘I think world netball do an exceptional job of marketing the Fast5 world series,’ he said.

‘They label it sport-tainment, bringing that entertainment factor to the sport. All the athletes get around it and I think it shows just how much fun netball can be. We have gone viral nearly every year we have been here for all the fun dances we do.

‘It would be great to see more things like that rolled out across all different types of sport.’

The moves were not to everybody’s taste however, with some detractors comparing the moves to Australian breakdancing sensation Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn.

Others, especially those who saw it live, loved the performance.

To top it all off, the Kelpies went on to win the whole tournament beating New Zealand 32-30 on Sunday night.
