Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid contract reportedly contains an astronomical release clause as the club look to protect their newly-acquired asset.

After months of speculation surrounding his future, Alexander-Arnold confirmed earlier this month that he would join Real at the end of the season.

The move proved seriously divisive among Liverpool fans, particularly as it appeared the academy graduate would be leaving his boyhood club on a free transfer after he rejected a new contract.

However, Real have ultimately elected to pay a £10million fee to complete the move early in order to have the England international in time for the beginning of their Club World Cup campaign next month.

The decision illustrates just how central Alexander-Arnold is expected to be to plans in the Spanish capital under new the Real boss – and Liverpool legend – Xabi Alonso.

One clear indication as to just how highly Real rate their new acquisition can be found in the details of his new contract.

According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Alexander-Arnold’s release clause will be €1billion (£840m).

The eye-watering figure means any prospective suitor looking to snare the 26-year-old from the Bernabeu in the future would need to cough up more than four times the current transfer world record.

With the saga surrounding his move away from Merseyside finally having come to an end, Alexander-Arnold will link up with his new team-mates before flying out to the United States next month to be part of the revamped Club World Cup.

The year’s tournament features 30 teams for the first time, with Madrid the early favourites to lift the trophy.

Madrid get their campaign underway on June 18 when they face a Al-Hilal side featuring the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ruben Neves and Kalidou Koulibaly.

They will then face Mexican side Pachuca four days later before rounding out their group against Red Bull Salzburg on June 26.
