Aston Villa have been left fuming after Morgan Rogers controversially had a goal ruled out against Manchester United.

Unai Emery’s side missed out on a place in the Champions League after suffering a 2-0 defeat by the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Villa thought they had taken the lead when United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to collect the ball inside the box, allowing Rogers to pounce on the loose ball and calmly tap it into the net.

However, the referee had already blown the whistle before the Villa midfielder scored, so the goal was disallowed, with VAR unable to intervene.

Explaining the decision, the Premier League wrote in a statement: ‘The referee’s call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession.

‘The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by the VAR.’
