However if you are in the Northern Territory, Victoria, Tasmania and a small portion of South Australia you might know it as ‘potato cake’.

‘If you call potato scallops “potato cakes”, you’re just a s**t bloke,’ one dedicated Facebook page posted.

The map was posted to Reddit and some users were convinced they were in the right. 

‘Anyone who says anything other than potato cake IS A GOD DAMNED CRAZY PERSON YOU STOP IT YOU STOP THAT S**T RIGHT NOW! THIS IS VERY SERIOUS,’ one Reddit user wrote.

‘Slicing something and frying it does not make it a cake! Cakes would require mashing the potato and mixing it with something else, then forming it back into a shape before cooking,’ another user replied.

‘Fritter and scallop both describe cutting things into pieces, and are more accurate and descriptive terms.’

‘I’m willing to admit fritter is more accurate, as it describes the entire process of cutting things into bits and frying it – it’s literally the dictionary definition – whereas scallop is just a method of cutting.’

‘Look… I’m fine with it being called a potato cake (even though that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard) but calling it a potato fritter is a crime against Australia and you best believe ASIO is in close contact and will be notified at the drop of the hat if potato fritter is ever used to describe a potato scallop,’ another user joked.
